the word on diets...

Today was a sweet - albeit too short - Sabbath for Dianne and me: she had to work (how is that a Sabbath?) and I had a wedding rehearsal. But we savored our time together and soaked in the blessings of rest and God's grace for the afternoon. And after the blessed couple had gathered to practice for tomorrow's ceremony - they are two of my favorite people in the world - we slipped away to be alone and feast on exquisite Spanish tappas and wine.

I found these words from poet Martin Galvin while at the Poet's House in Manhattan yesterday and they keep rising to the the surface as the day comes to a close: They come from "The Word on Diets."

He is dying for the best dinner but never finds it
On the plate that he has to be served, being the kind
Of serious, no- nonsense, time counts, pragmatical,
eminently sensible man. What such men get is creamed
and salted beef, reft of its cream for cholesterol’s sake,
Reft of salt for the arteries’ sake, reft of beef
for the serious sake of soybean futures.

Be easy, man, and savor the escargot,
You want to tell him. Eat poetry.”

Time for bed and sweet rest (while Springsteen does the whole "Darkness" album and more at Giants Stadium. Dig this OLD version of the second song from that classic.) Here's to tomorrow: a wedding, a vow and a celebration... thanks be to God!

Sorry to have to post this in two parts but that's how youtube works... for Springsteen fans it is ESSENTIAL! From the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, NJ in 1978. In-freakin-credible!

By coincidence, I sat with a group of Muslims on Saturday afternoon at the local mosque.

They were explaining Ramadan to me--not just the religious aspects, but what it means to go without food or water for up to 13 1/2 hours (roughly the length of daylight in September), and how you are still to try to be loving, generous, do your usual work, and not be "obvious" about the fasting.

It was a real privilege to be with them. One of them gave me his English copy of the Q'ran to keep.
