So, once again, it is crying time in the United States because of gun violence. There are 13 confirmed dead and 14 wounded in this massacre at the Washington Navy Yard - including the assailant - and no known motive at this time. WTF!?! This has become all too common place in contemporary American life: a man (almost always) with access to automatic weapons acts out his fear/shame/violence/ rage on innocent victims. Politicians weep - the NRA pontificates - social activists get all puffed up - and nothing changes. NOTHING.
Except, of course, some families will go to bed tonight without a loved one - and will never know why. In three days time, most of us will slip back into our pre-shooting routines and act like this out of balanced and overly violent culture is normal. Public officials will talk about dealing with mental health problems. Media blow-hearts will remind us that we live in the best country in the world. And our children will become a little more afraid as the rest of us quietly retreat a little more into our private lives and hope for the best.
Tonight I am not going to jump to conclusions - or expect quick solutions - I am simply going to weep with the broken and own the fact that what passes for normal in these United States is broken, sick and dangerous.
